Scene 4 – Adult life (Part 2)
Set: living room (continued)
Scene: Tommy’s friends enter the room. Tommy offers them a scotch and a discussion ensues.
Jerry “Still on the Board of the Community Centre?”
Tommy “Yes and two others”
Jerry “Still playing hockey?”
Tommy “twice a week, sometimes more.”
Jerry “Swimming?”
Tommy “Up at 5:00 AM three mornings a week.”
Allan “That’s fucking nuts.”
Tommy “Secret to a perfect marriage. Respect each others time and space. If you hardly see each other it makes the time together special.”
All three raise their glasses in a silent toast.
Allan ”How’s work?”
Tommy “Brutal. I overheard a couple of people at the office talking about how it’s not fun any more. I don’t know about you but I never said to anyone I’m off to fun. It’s called work for a reason.”
Jerry “I feel for you. but it hasn’t slowed you down. You do so much. Why?”
Tommy “Because I can.”
Allan “Where do you find the time?”
Tommy “I gave up sleep long ago”
Jerry “What keeps you motivated?”
Tommy holds up his hand; opens it wide extending his fingers and thumb. “Balance” he says. “it’s the mix of family, business, community, sports and music” counting off his five digits as he runs through the list.
Cue the music
Tommy begins to sing
Friends provide backup for chorus
Song-Balance
Life it has so many components
That most of us, we just never see
We all have our own hidden talents
The trick is to find chemistry
Once, before I found my way
I felt lost, felt that something was missing
I tried to endure through the fray
Till I realized that I sought equilibrium
Chorus
I seek balance Find my balance
I need balance Keep my balance
Oft we can get so caught up
Recognize don’t become one dimensional
Search out your own driving force
find your own sense of balance
Try to assemble the parts
Things that will round your existence
Live, and give back, find your arts
You can push through the resistance
Chorus
